Herman Bonthuis zong in de jaren '80 vooral Groningse levensliederen. Daarnaast zong hij liederen van Geert Teis. Bonthuis zong in de North Star Showband en liet zich ook begeleiden door het stemmingsorkest The Specials. Verder speelde hij enige tijd in Troef.
